EDUCATION...
Without good public schools we fail to educate young people for the jobs of the future. And these young men and women will not have the good lives that Americans my age have had. Today a large percentage of children in our country live in poverty. These kids will show up at school without the experiences needed for a good start. I support spending for good pre-schools for these at-risk children.
We need teachers that can use and teach the technology needed for the 21st century. In-service training should be provided and enhanced. Past administrations started a misguided policy that relied too much on standardized testing instead of student comprehension. Too many children have dropped out as a result.
Let's lower the interst rate on college loans to 3.4%. Also let's make sure that these for-profit colleges only get government money when they actually educate people. I would support a bonus system to the college when the graduate has completed a year working in an appropriate job. But I would expect, too, that colleges signing up students, only to have them drop out, would have to reimburse the Treasury.
